The importance of regular servicing

The Goldmann Applanation Tonometer has long been considered the gold standard for measuring intraocular pressure (IOP), a crucial measurement in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma. However, the accuracy of these measurements relies heavily on proper calibration and maintenance of your equipment.

The impact of uncalibrated equipment

Using an uncalibrated tonometer can lead to:

  • Incorrect IOP readings that might mask or exaggerate pressure problems
  • Delayed detection of glaucoma progression
  • Unnecessary adjustments to patient treatment plans
  • Potential compliance issues with regulatory requirements

Annual calibration helps maintain the precision of your GAT and supports better patient outcomes. Some EU countries have made regular calibration a mandatory requirement, recognizing its importance in maintaining high standards of eye care.

Why regular calibration matters

Regular calibration ensures your GAT provides consistent and accurate readings, which is essential because:

  • Even small variations in IOP measurements can impact clinical decision-making
  • Early detection of glaucoma often relies on precise IOP measurements
  • Long-term patient monitoring requires consistent and reliable readings
  • Equipment accuracy affects both initial diagnosis and ongoing treatment effectiveness
