Frequently asked questions

There are two streaks of light appearing on my Retinoscope. Is this broken?

The Retinoscope incorporates a paired mirror and reflector system which have been optimised to project a high-definition patch. The Reflector will disperse excess light to give maximum performance of the Retinoscope; in doing so it creates a smaller secondary patch below the original patch. The secondary patch does not influence the function of the device as it is not visible through the viewing lens of the Retinoscope. The natural variation in component position and manufacturing tolerances may cause some variation in the size of the secondary patch. This again is quite normal and reflects the individual tuning of each device to provide optimised performance.

A significant improvement in the device has been the development of LED illumination. The optically flatter patch provides for much better functionality of the device and noticeably better measurement results. You may find the Primary patch includes a halo created from the LED illumination. This again is our mechanism for managing the quality of the patch and will not be seen while using the product: it does not affect the function of the device.

What is the difference between the 2.8v and 3.6v handheld instruments?

The 2.8v instruments are powered by 2 x AA dry cell batteries as opposed to the 3.6v instrument which charges using the Keeler lithium charger. The 3.6v instrument is noticeably brighter than the 2.8v instrument.

What do the red and blue colours on handheld instruments and bulbs represent?

The blue handles and bulbs are for the 2.8v handheld instruments and the red handles and bulbs are for the 3.6v instrument. To ensure your instrument is working at it’s optimum level and to avoid blowing bulbs, the handle colour and bulb colour should be the same.

My older handheld with the NiCad charging system and large diameter handles is no longer charging. Do I need to replace my instrument and charger?

The good news is that your older style instrument head will fit and work on the current lithium equipment, so you will only need to replace your handles and charger. You can purchase these via our products tab on the website under, ‘Products-Handhelds-Handheld Accessories’ or by searching for SKU: 1911-P-1228 Double Lithium upgrade kit.
