Reflecting on last year, we saw an overwhelming level of quality submissions with images relating to a wide variety of anterior conditions from corneal abrasion and iris cysts, to corneal lacerations and hymphemas.
2025 winners
First place
First place - Abigail James, Senior Ophthalmic Photographer, Ophthalmology, Royal Gwent Hospital, Wales
After much deliberation, winner Abigail James, a Senior Ophthalmic Photographer at Royal Gwent Hospital, reclaimed the top spot for a second year running. Not only did she win £300 in vouchers, but she secured the front cover of September’s 2025 Eye News Imaging Supplement!
Her fascinating image of a spontaneous hyphema was captured using a medium slit beam positioned to bounce light off the iris and transilluminate / highlight the hyphema’s shape and structure. Experimenting with the axis of her camera, she took the shot at 200 ISO and 1/30 shutter speed, positioning her subject oblique to emphasise the pathology’s location.
Second place
Second place - Keyur Patel, Doctor of Optometry, Tompkins Knight and Son Optometrists, Northampton
Keyur Patel claimed second prize with his striking image capturing bubbles under the orthokeratology lens.
Judge Nicola Bennett, Head of Clinical Education at Keeler said of the 2nd place entry, “Keyur Patel’s image has exceptional clarity, demonstrating remarkable technique and attention to detail”.
Third place
Third place - Beathan Halbert-Fettes, Ophthalmic Photographer, South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust
Finally, Beathan Halbert-Fettes took third place with an crystal clear image of a corneal laceration.
Rosalyn Painter, Ophthalmic Healthcare Science Education Manager at GREG, said of the 3rd place winner, “Beathan’s image shows skill and dexterity; the illumination and focus perfectly illustrate the lesion”.
Runners up
The ANTS Imaging Competition continues to highlight the remarkable talent and commitment within our ophthalmic community. We sincerely thank all participants, judges, and partners for making this event a tremendous success.
As such, the judges felt that so many entries deserved recognition, but there were several additions that gained honourable mentions including;
