At Keeler, we’re always looking for ways to be kinder to our planet and help our customers do the same. One big step we’re taking is encouraging the use of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) instead of Nitrous Oxide (N2O) in our cryo consoles. The Keeler Cryomatic MKII is designed to be compatible with both gases and making this transition has never been easier.

Laura Wakely,  Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon at York Hospital, NHS, was recently sponsored by Keeler to conduct research into this topic, which was then presented at Euretina 2024. This research report is available to download here.

Why choose CO2?

The biggest reason to switch from N2O to CO2 is that it’s much better for the environment. N2O has a global warming potential 273 times worse than CO2. By switching to CO2 in your Keeler Cryomatic MKII, you’re helping to reduce the negative effects of N2O as a potent greenhouse gas on the environment and thereby promoting more environmentally conscious healthcare practices.

How our cryo technology works

The Keeler Cryomatic MkII uses the Joule-Thomson effect of rapid gas expansion to produce a dramatic cooling effect inside the tip of our cryoprobes. This is perfect for a producing excellent clinical outcomes for range of ophthalmic cryosurgical applications.

Does CO2 work as well as N2O?

Our extensive testing indicates that the use of CO2 provides results that are as good as using N2O – or marginally better! Our results show that cryoprobe performance, both in terms of tip temperature and freezing power, are equivalent or slightly improved when using CO2.

Switching to CO2: It's easier than you think

Changing to CO2 is straightforward. We’ll help and advise you to get everything you need. Keeler already has a range of easy-to-use CO2 cylinder adapters to suit the most popular cylinder sizes used worldwide.

Our friendly team will walk you through the whole process, from setting it up to making sure everything’s working smoothly afterward.

More reasons to love CO2

Helping the environment isn’t the only perk of switching to CO2:

Cost-effective

CO2 costs less than N2O, which means you’ll spend less on gas in the long run.

A safer workplace

N2O can be risky to work with – there are even special health and safety rules about it. While our Keeler Cryomatic MKII has a special hose to get rid of extra gas safely, not having N2O in your operating room at all is even better.

Ready to make the switch?

Changing to CO2 in your Keeler Cryomatic MKII is a win-win. It’s good for the planet, saves you money, and makes your workplace safer. Our team at Keeler is here to help you every step of the way.
